Heading
Chevy Chase

Walking west from Penzance in 1983, we suddenly find ourselves inspired by a church spire in the distance, but it's nothing to do with the song.

I tuned in to the weatherman to see what he'd say
There's a cold wind a-blowing up from Chevy today
Out on the cricket field rain has stopped play
And some vandals have damaged the wicket

With bone splintered fragments, well he called up the nurse
With a blade down his pad lest things turned for the worse
He was flattening the divots down as they loaded the hearse
Now that ain't now way to play cricket

Well I got me a job because they cut off my dole
There's a union here to gain workers control
You'll lose your job my lad if you fail to enrole
Well that was the thing I was dreading

Then from Yorkshire to Somerset I was king of the field
With my barn door defence of my lofty ideals
They tell me that anarchy and peace became real
And it lives in a field outside Reading

This time of the year sorry tidings doth bring
And a tale of sore woe on a rose and a ring
Your true love gets married on the first day of spring
And she will not ask you to the wedding

His glorious vocabulary inspired all the lads
His words were so stirring they drove us all mad
We picked up our water pistols, strapped on our pads
And went out to fight for the workers

Then squared were my shoulders as I stood in my crease
In the name of our Captain for love and for peace
Then a fast bowling cricketer terminated my lease
When he took my leg stump with a yorker

Back in the pavillion I stare at the wall
And the air of despair casts a shadowy pall
O'er the cap on my head m'dear and the box on my balls
And the threat of defeat is so heavy

Twenty three for six wickets was all we'd scored
When I fell on my knees and I prayed to the Lord
He opened the heavens and it thundered and poured
And gave us a draw against Chevy

I tuned in to the weatherman to see what he'd say
There's a cold wind a-blowing up from Chevy today
Out on the cricket field rain has stopped play
And with Grace I retire from my innings
